TIES BETWEEN HINDUSTAN TIMES EDITOR AND BJP CHIEF AMIT SHAH HOME MINISTRY FILES SHOWS
It is alleged that there is a nexus between Hindustan Times Editor and Amit Shah when an email between the two along with Prime Minister’s office was published. The email was obtained along with bunch of other documents after RTI (Right to Information) request was filed by Frontline and the same was published in magazine.
The Hindustan Times Editor Shishir Gupta in his email shows some signs of alleged linkages between the two, the email consisted of certain “violations” by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Government. Email also highlighted the turf between Delhi’s lieutenant governor and Delhi’s Chief Minister.
“KEJRIWAL AGAINST CENTRE” was the subject of the email sent by the editor, some of the contents of the email reads as “Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal is on course to abrogate all powers of the Centre in NCR with neither the Home Ministry nor the BJP MLAs/Pradesh unit doing anything to contest it”. Another glimpse of email content reads as “example of violations by Kejriwal”.
Now looking at this style of correspondence some of the journo experts from the wire opine that it is not at all the common practice among the journalists while corresponding with the officials, as rather than seeking response or asking question from the officials the editor went on to assert some claims.
“This issue appears to have brought the turf battle into the public domain. The LG subsequently asked Kejriwal that the files from senior bureaucrats be sent directly to him,” Frontline stated.
The Hindustan Times is one of the largest circulated newspaper in Delhi. Surprisingly Gupta, was tagged as “one of the three names unsuccessfully floated by persons close to the Modi government last year for the politically crucial job of Press Trust of India editor” as per a report from The Wire.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal twitted a question to the proprietor of Hindustan Times “Executive Editor of HT gets PMO to act against AAP govt in Delhi. Will Shobhna Bhartia (Hindustan Times proprietor) sack her editor? HT’s creditability at stake.”
However when Asked from The Hindustan Times Team they said that the Frontline report “mischaracterises Shishir Gupta’s reportage on the conflict between the Delhi LG and CM.” It said the email was “in reality, nothing more than the outline of a story he was proposing to write at the time, based on his reporting.”
“The email followed phone conversations Mr Gupta had with the offices of Amit Shah as well as the PMO, seeking comment on the conflict. They asked him to send them an outline, which he did: this is not unusual journalistic practice.”
