After bringing an ordinance to set aside the ban imposed by Supreme Court Judgment on Jallikattu, the ruling government AIADMK is opting for a permanent solution to the issue which has created much uproar over the bull-festival.

What is Jallikattu?

One may ask What is Jallikattu, so for those who don’t know about it, Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport organised in Tamil Nadu during Pongal. It is an Ancient practice which goes back to 2000 years ago. In this a bull is set free inside an arena, so the main challenge lies in controlling the bulls with bare hands by Young participants and taming them. Whosoever succeeds in taming the bull wins the contest which attracts some prizes which are traditionally not much lavish. It is Also known as Eruthazhuvuthal or Manju virattu.

What is the controversy?

Supreme Court banned the practice of Jallikattu for the reason that it involves abusing the animal for the purpose of performing sport. The apex Court said ” “bulls cannot be allowed as performing animals, either for Jallikattu events or bullock-cart races in the state of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or elsewhere in the country.”, court further added that “the five freedoms of animals, including freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition, freedom from fear and distress, freedom from physical and thermal discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, and freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour.”

Apex Court asked parliament “elevate rights of animals to that of constitutional rights, as done by many of the countries around the world, so as to protect their dignity and honour”.

Why so Hue and cry Now?

Environment Ministry in 2016 altered the notification issue by the former government in 2011 and approved the sport. This was in opposite of what Apex court ordered and attracted challenge from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Subsequently, a stay order was issued by the court.

So, Enraged by the recent order by the court people are protesting on mass level at various places like Marina Beach, Madurai, Sivaganga, and Pattukottai these are the places which have witnessed Jallikattu despite the ban.

Now Protestors are demanding Ban on PETA which has actively prosecuted against the sport with an aim to stop animal atrocities, they claim that it leads to animal torture as well as abuse. Many Leaders like DMK leader Stalin are calling PETA “anti national” which is bent on destroying Tamil Nadu’s culture.

Lets see What at last will culminate out of this.
